The EmVP of Punctuation

The em dash is my favorite punctuation mark — even if you don’t love it as much you cannot deny its versatility over any other.

Commas, colons, parenthesis — they are all replaceable by the sweet long line.

Colons are aptly named — they ugly.

Fun fact — my wife’s first text message to me, asking about getting coffee, contained an em dash. This indicated to me early on that she had a good head on her shoulders (despite being interested in me).

I’m quite fond of Medium. The editor on this platform is famously minimal — and absolutely gorgeous — so the fact that all you need to do is type “-” twice to insert the king of punctuation marks bolsters the reputation of both.

There you have it, the case for em dash has been made. Just don’t utilize it more than twice in a sentence and they’ll always make you look brilliant.
