When the focus is on the outcome — such as x bushels of corn — the result is a disproportionate system that causes damages, and ultimately less overall productivity.

This oversimplification, raw inputs vs processed outputs, ignores the complexity and sensitivity of the natural world. There is so much more going on, from a microscopic to a cosmic level.

What would be considered fringe agriculture at this point in time understands that a layered, perennial, multi-specied ecosystem is much more productive than an annual monoculture of grain. Humans inherently knew this for 99.9̅% of their history, as it’s clearly expressed in nature itself.

We can apply this idea to all we do. Instead of merely chasing metrics, dollars, or likes, make sure your ecology is in balance.
