Secession in America is inevitable

It feels like we have never been more divided as a nation. Looking at two separate Twitter feeds is like glimpsing at completely different versions of reality. Each side emphatically and fervently believing their perception of the world, appalled at the possibility of any dissent.

Fortunately, these individuals’ lives will be able to be as insulated from each other as their social media echo chambers. At least in a digital and economic sense.

With technology currently available, each person could ensure that every dollar they spend and piece of data they generate exclusively align with their values. It really is a truly remarkable thing. Alas, it will not happen as fast as it could, because it will eliminate an entire class of administrative workers currently functioning as middle men.

And we may find this actually brings us closer as neighbors. When henchmen are no longer pointing guns, simultaneously enforcing upon and protecting us from each others’ preferences and opinions, we may find we’re capable of living and letting live.
