Monoculture is an Oxymoron
A bunch of any single thing is never good. Only one of the five basic tastes in excess ruins a dish. Employing only one type of use of buildings use over a human-scale area, or a bunch of houses that all look the same, you get suburbs. Any decent wealth manager would advise against waging everything on a lone investment source. A single plant exclusively grown over a swath of land is impossible in nature, and a root of all of our nation’s ills.
In a biological sense, a culture is highly dependent on environmental factors. Culinarily, if you are making a batch of sauerkraut or yogurt, those environmental factors are just as important as the ingredients.
From the sociological standpoint, new cultures are created on the intersections and fringes of others. Even the most distinct and set apart cultures, like the Amish, both draw from those before and are defined in large part by their contrast to what is popular or mainstream.
The broad definitions of human culture are the collective norms of human societies, and the collection of arts and intellectual achievements from those groups. This is the furthest we can get from a sole, isolated species…
We need a new word for the disaster that is monocultures.
Monovulgarities? Any ideas?
