My 10-month old son alerts me when he’s awake, and as soon as I scoop him up out of his crib he’s on high alert. As I carry him out, his eyes are gazing ahead — he doesn’t pay much mind to me, he’s focused on what’s ahead. He has work to do.

He proceeds to touch and taste everything he can reach in the house. Currently, he’s really into poking his finger into holes — the inside of a green onion he chomped open with his four new teeth, the audio jack on a speak, my belly button if left unguarded… Discovering what sounds he can coax from objects is another favorite activity. He gets hungry, and tired, eats and sleeps. This repeats itself until he sleeps through the night.

I’m certain his brain assimilates more information in a day during through these intensely-focused campaigns than mine does in months. His mind is on 11. He’s not worried his pants match his onesie, if his hair is combed, the current state of politics are, or if his opinions are popular. He’s too busy learning.
