In the days of old, you would give up all your worldly possessions, track down a master, and commit yourself to years of indentured servitude to glean morsels of wisdom toward a specialized field you’d dedicate yourself to for life. If you were lucky.

Today, so much knowledge is available at your fingertips that the challenge isn’t finding a sage, but picking from the masses from across the globe. Their tutelage may come in the form of books, blogs, or YouTube videos. You can even stitch together a custom-tailored education comprised of the greatest minds in several different fields, creating a custom curriculum never before offered in the world, perfect for your unique purpose.

Having read Seth Godin’s blog every day for 7 years, he may actually be the most influential thinker in my life, unquestionably in the field of marketing and the connection economy. I could list dozens more who have helped shape my worldview, philosophy, and trained me in tangible real-world skills, all without me ever touching foot in their dojos. It’s exciting, awesome, and frightening to realize there are infinitely more mentors and lessons available at all times.
