How we can come out ahead from the Coronavirus.

I’ve never seen a global response to a pandemic like the one unfolding right now. The markets reflect the panic.

As one major public event after another is cancelled, it seems like life for much of the population is going to be very different for at least the near future.

I admit to being a bit of a carp, but NBA, Disneyland, St. Patty’s Day Parades, these are not what I’d consider to be the most enriching events in the first oplace. Spending money on overpriced beers, to waste hours in an environment too loud to talk to the person next to you, seeking the most distracting amount of stimulation — probably not the worst thing in the world to take a break from.

Maybe we’ll see folks reading more, picking up new skills or brushing up on old ones, and sharing more quality time with loved ones. Build the chicken coop, raspberry pi, or model airplane that’s been collecting dust in the basement. It’s possible there could somehow just be a massive increase in consumption of Netflix, Amazon, and food delivery, but I’m rooting for a renewal of meaning.

This is not only an indictment on current culture, either. Grocery shopping today, I considered the value of my dollar compared to the nutritional content of the food, and shelf life. I bought canned sardines instead of cinnamon rolls. We’ll see how long this resolve lasts.
