Desiderata 2019/8
1 min readSep 22, 2019
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
Strong contrasts lend a steady rhythm of dramatic effect throughout the poem. It’s fitting that the author closes out in this way. Despite heartbreak and toil, the world is still an amazing place.
In the final two lines this evening, I hear that being cheerful is a state and a decision you can make, while true happiness is something you work for.
