A Few Reasons Why I’m Writing
I’m three days into my commitment to write publicly every day. It seems like a good idea to jot down a few reasons why I’ve embarked on this journey, in order explain my purposes and provide myself with a bit of motivation.
1. Give back.
I’ve been blessed by amazing authors, mentors, vloggers, etc. I love soaking up information, and there hasn’t been a better time to be someone who loves to learn new things. Likewise, this is the greatest time in history for any individual to share. I’m looking forward to being a conduit for these lessons. Also, something really cool happens when you pass on something you learn to others: it’s like you learn it again from another angle, and reinforce those synapses.
In the last couple weeks, just thinking about this challenge, my thinking has been impacted in a special way. As I’m working through a problem or researching a topic, I find myself considering how to express it to someone else. This exercise has provided a whole new valuable perspective.
2. Help formulate thoughts.
Once you put words on paper, there they are, exactly as you left them there. This is something I really love about writing. Getting to work on something, prepare it, and get it just right before you present it to someone else, or everyone. I am looking forward to getting better at letting the words flow, saying what I mean with less edits, and how this could benefit my ability to communicate effectively overall.
3. Learn to judge myself less.
While I really enjoy curating my thoughts — whether it’s a letter, a post, or a tweet — mulling over what I’m expressing and how it may be received can feed pride, fear, and self-importance. One of my hopes is that through making writing every day a simple habit, a job, I can shed some of these splinters, and the insecurities they breed, and learn to just ship.
Today and yesterday my posts were contemplative on the act of writing each day. As I settle into my grove, these are some of the topics I plan to regularly include: perspectives on food production, farming, entrepreneurship, technology, products, do-it-yourself.
